Click here for Official 2009 Jail Break results

On Sunday, October 11th, the Franklin County Sheriff's Office hosted its third annual jail Break 5K Road Race/Walk and Kids Fun Run with this year's proceeds going to the Greenfield Recreation Department.  Despite the early morning chill, runners and walkers, ranging from ages one to eighty, energetically raced to the finish line hoping to 'catch the crooks'.

On behalf of the Franklin County Deputy Sheriffs' Association and the Road Race Committee, I would like to thank the following businesses and individuals for helping to make this event so successful:  Atty. Sean O'Sullivan, Northampton Running Company, The Whately Inn, Pelican Products Inc, Western Mass Electric Company, Coldwell Banker, J & J Farms, Sean Lavoine/AHL, Bill's Auto Repair, Keefe Supply, Performance Food Group, Floral Affairs, Foster's Supermarket, Patricia Thomas, Silver Screen Design, locallyrun.com, Rich Arsenault of Accu-Spec, volunteers, runners, walkers and kids.

Through their generosity and assistance, we are able to demonstrate our continued strong commitment to our community by contributing to the many programs provided by the Greenfield Recreation Department.

SHERIFF JOINS ARMY RESERVE JOB PARTNERSHIP

On Monday, August 3rd, Franklin County Sheriff Fred Macdonald signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the U.S. Army Reserve aimed at helping soldiers secure employment in fields where their military training and expertise will be an asset to their new employers.  Known as the “Army Reserve Employer Partnership Initiative”, the program was launched in April of 2008 by Chief of the Army Reserve, Lt. General Jack Stultz “to assist soldiers with their civilian careers and professional development in recognition of their dedication to our country and their selfless service.”  The goal of the program is to link employers with highly skilled reservists who can make meaningful contributions in the civilian workplace while serving the Army Reserve in critically understaffed military occupational specialties.  “We begin by linking our Sheriff’s Office website to the Army Reserve’s website so that reservists looking for jobs can apply for positions.  Then, we agree to review soldier applications and offer interviews where appropriate.  Reservists often have training in specialized areas that can be invaluable to public safety agencies”, the Sheriff said.  Numerous public safety agencies across the nation have joined the initiative.  In Massachusetts, the Worcester County Sheriff’s Office and the Department of Correction conducted signing ceremonies in April of this year.  Brigadier General John Cornelius and members of his staff, Greenfield Mayor William Martin and various members of local veterans’ agencies were in attendance.

FCSO FIFTH ANNUAL GOLF OUTING

  Thank You!

The Franklin Country Sheriff’s Office recently hosted its fifth annual Four-Person Scramble Golf Outing to benefit Warm the Children, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing new winter clothing for area needy children.  Despite pending rain, a sold-out group of thirty-six teams, a total of 144 participants, energetically joined us for eighteen holes of golf.

Thanks to the coordinated efforts of many, it is my great pleasure to announce that between sponsorships, the raffle, and the Red Sox trip package, our golf benefit raised over $6,700 to present to Warm the Children.  I would like to personally thank the following businesses and individuals for helping to make this event so successful.  Through their generosity, we are able to demonstrate our strong commitment to our community by helping deserving area children stay warm during the cold winter months.

FCSO VS HAMPDEN COUNTY HOCKEY GAME

On February 27th, 2009, the Franklin County and the Hampden County Sheriffs' Hockey teams faced off against each other at the Mass Mutual Center in Springfield.  Hampden County entered the contest as the defending MA Sheriff's Cup champions.  Though Hampden County was heavily favored to win, both squads skated to a 1 - 1 tie.  The Springfield Falcons generously donated ticket vouchers for 150 members of the Franklin County Youth Hockey Association as a result of this game.  We look forward to making this an annual event.

LT. SUE COREY RECEIVES NATIONAL R.A.D. (Rape Aggression Defense) AWARD

On July 24th, Lt. Sue Corey, Community Outreach Coordinator at the Franklin County Sheriff's Office, was presented the radKIDS® Starfish Award at the National R.A.D. Training Conference in Orlando, FL.  The Starfish Award is presented annually to one of 5,000 radKIDS® instructors in the United States, Canada and the UK.  She was honored by Executive Director Steve Daley for her "commitment to the community and for making a difference in the lives of so many children".

Since its inception in 1998, radKIDS®, Inc. has been committed to providing education that enhances the ability of children and parents to utilize knowledge, skills, and power to protect themselves from violence and harm.  Children become empowered and learn to replace the fear, confusion and panic of dangerous situations with confidence, personal safety skills and self esteem.

Lt. Corey started one of the first radKIDS® self-empowerment programs in Massachusetts and has provided the program to over 400 Franklin County children.  There have been 50 documented 'saves' as a direct result of radKIDS® training, the 50th being here in Franklin County.  Lt. Corey also certified in R.A.D. instruction for adult females and was among the first class of graduates of the R.A.D for Seniors certification program. Additionally, she directs the Sheriff's Child ID Program which provides ID packages to over 1000 Franklin County families each year; and, the T.I.P.P (Teenage Incarceration Prevention Project), a program intended to serve as a wake-up call for at-risk juveniles by exposing them to the reality of life in jail as one of the consequences of criminal conduct.  She also serves as a part-time TRIAD Officer throughout various towns in Franklin County.  We commend Lt. Corey for her continued efforts to enhance public safety and the quality of life in our community.

Congratulations, Sue, on this prestigious award.
