Correctional Officer Requirements/Benefits

Franklin County Sheriff’s Office Correctional Officer recruits take part in a nine (9) week basic recruit training academy. For those who successfully complete the training academy, benefits include a starting salary over $43,000, paid vacation, 11 paid holidays, medical and dental benefits and a retirement plan. To qualify, applicants must:

  • Have a valid driver’s license

  • Be at least 19 years old

  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent

  • Pass a background check, physical exam (Correctional Officer Physical Standards) and a battery of tests

Academy Outline

At the academy, trainees are instructed in the following subjects:

  • staff/inmate relations
  • substance abuse
  • suicide awareness and prevention
  • use of force
  • court testimony
  • first responder certification
  • history of jails and the Office of the Sheriff

  • supervision of special needs inmates

  • use of restraints
